Prophetic Advice on How to Remember What You Memorise From The Qurʾān

Ibn ʿUmar reported from the Prophet ﷺ that he said:

إِذَا قَامَ صَاحِبُ الْقُرْآنِ فَقَرَأَهُ بِاللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ ذَكَرَهُ، وَإِنْ لَمْ يَقُمْ بِهِ نَسِيَهُ.

“If the companion (memoriser) of the Qurʾān stands (in prayer) and he reads it during the night and day, he will remember it, and if he does not stand (in prayer) with it he will forget it.”

Recorded by Ibn Naṣr in Qiyām al-Layl (p. 73) and authenticated by Sh. al-Albānī in al-Ṣaḥīḥah, no. 597.

When listing the factors which help one’s memorisation, Sh. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz al-Sadḥān mentions the above mentioned ḥadīth in his manual for students of knowledge, Maʿālim fī Ṭarīq Ṭalab al-ʿIlm (p. 196). He places it under advice number 3 and says:

“Standing with what one memorises during the night prayer and repeating  that due to his ﷺ saying…”

He then says:

“Indeed (it is known) from experience – as more than one have stated – that whoever memorises verses and then prays the night prayer with them and repeats that again and again, indeed that increases the deep-rootedness of the memorisation in his mind in contrast to repeating them outside of prayer.”

Action Plan:

  1. Prayer night prayer regularly
  2. Recite what you memorise in your night prayer on a consistent basis
